Cardiac Catheterization
If your physician feels that you may have coronary artery disease, it may be recommended you have a cardiac catheterization. This is a procedure which allows the cardiologist to measure the pressures in the heart, visualize the arteries surrounding it and identify any blockages and their severity.
During the procedure, a catheter (long flexible tube) is inserted into a blood vessel, usually located in the right groin, to photograph the arteries. The cardiologist injects a special x-ray dye into the catheter which makes visualization of the arteries possible. As the dye is injected, photos will be taken of the arteries and any blockages present.
Each cath lab at Springfield Regional Cardiac Center is equipped with a sophisticated camera system which produce high quality, large images for improved diagnostic capabilities.
